Role in Ecosystem:

Bluegills are the primary food source in every Iowa farm pond. They spawn from May to September and provide a large amount of food to the predators in the pond. Having a healthy bluegill population typically creates a fishery that all ages can enjoy.  A healthy pond has several age classes and a variety of sizes of bluegill.  It is not uncommon for a one pound largemouth bass to eat over a thousand 2" bluegills in a single growing season.
